Braces, aligners, and corrective remedies to fix crowded, crooked, or misaligned teeth.
Types of Braces
Orthodontic treatment is available in different options to suit your dental needs and lifestyle. Traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and other orthodontic appliances are used to correct crooked teeth, bite problems, and spacing issues. At Chitra Dental Clinic, we recommend the most suitable treatment based on your age, dental condition, and long-term oral health goals.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners offer a discreet and comfortable way to straighten teeth without the appearance of traditional braces. These removable aligners are custom-made to gradually move teeth into their ideal position while allowing you to eat, brush, and floss with ease. They are an excellent option for suitable patients seeking a more aesthetic orthodontic solution.
Treatment Process
Every orthodontic journey begins with a detailed dental examination and personalised treatment planning. After evaluating your teeth, jaw alignment, and bite, we recommend the most appropriate orthodontic solution. Regular review appointments help monitor progress and ensure your teeth move safely and effectively towards their ideal position.
Benefits
Orthodontic treatment does more than improve the appearance of your smile. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, help reduce excessive wear, improve bite function, and contribute to better long-term oral health. A well-aligned smile can also enhance confidence and make everyday speaking and chewing more comfortable.

About the Procedure & FAQ
Below are answers to the most common questions, concerns, and procedural details regarding Orthodontics (Braces & Alignment) at Chitra Dental Clinic.
Numerous are the causes of malocclusion. The following are some of the more common causes: 1. Heredity: The genes are probably the most important factors. Many disorders in the arrangement of the teeth are inherited. 2. Thumb sucking and other habits: Continued sucking of the thumb beyond 4 years of age very often causes protrusion of the teeth and other abnormalities in the bite. 3. Use of pacifiers: Children who have used pacifiers for too long tend to develop some problems of the bite. 4. Injuries: Injuries to the teeth or the bone during childhood may cause abnormalities of the bite. 5. Dental decay and diseases of the gums: They may sometimes cause drifting of the teeth and therefore problems of the bite.
No. when there is spacing between teeth, crowding or proclination of teeth orthodontic treatment is advised.
Ideally it is indicated when all the permanent molars have erupted or in the process of shedding at about 11 or 12 years. Some children may need them even earlier. When the children have a prominent mandible this should be corrected much earlier during the growth phase about 9 or 10 years. When there is a cross bite i.e. the reverse of normal upper tooth placed inside and lower tooth placed outside it can be corrected as when the tooth erupts.
At an early age the braces are less painful and the treatment duration is shorter. Advancing age makes the jaws harder and therefore makes it difficult to mold the jaws and to move the teeth. But orthodontic treatment can be carried out at any age.
The duration of treatment depends from person to person and from one orthodontist to other. Most jaw molding and jaw corrections carried out during the growing age takes 1-1.5 years. Orthodontic treatment with braces often takes 2 – 2.5 years.
Initially for a few days after the braces are fixed, the mouth tends to be sore and some pain can be expected. Sores may develop on the cheeks or lips or the tongue after the braces are fixed. These often heal in a few days. You can use orthodontic wax to screen sharp brackets, and warm salt water rinsing will help heal the sores.
Having braces should not prevent you from carrying on normal daily activities. However, care should be taken during sports activities as you may fall and injure the mouth. Tell your orthodontist so they can prepare a protective mouth guard for you.
Most orthodontic braces do not interfere with talking. However, if the orthodontist gives you a removable plate to wear, this could cause difficulties in speaking for the first few days, but you will quickly get used to it.
You should be careful to avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods (such as toffee, nuts, chocolates, and gums) as they may break the brackets. When eating hard fruits like apples, cut them into small bite-sized pieces first.
Sometimes a bracket may come off if you bite on a piece of hard food. If a part of the braces falls off, seek an appointment to get it fixed, as frequent breakages can delay your overall treatment time.
Accidental swallowing of a small piece of loose brace bracket usually does not cause harm and will pass naturally. However, accidental inhalation is more serious and requires immediate medical attention.
It does not hurt when the braces are being fixed. Soreness and mild pressure start a few hours later. You can use orthodontic wax and standard pain relievers as prescribed to ease the transition.
Yes, your orthodontist may prescribe rubber bands (elastics) to deliver additional force to align the teeth. They should be removed while eating and replaced with fresh ones daily. Wear only the size and quantity prescribed by your dentist.
Accidental swallowing of a medical-grade orthodontic rubber band is safe and harmless. It will pass naturally through your digestive system.
Regular brushing and flossing are extremely important, as the braces easily trap food debris. Try to brush after every meal and use specialized interdental brushes to clean around the brackets.
